Sleepy time Spiced [almond] Milk Print Recipe Print Recipe

When I was a young girl [some days I still act like one] my babysitter would always make us warm milk before bedtime.

I was an anxious kid.

Sleepovers? Forget it.

The milk somehow calmed me down and put me right to bed. It’s a magical thing.

So. . .  I might be an anxious adult at times, but sleepovers, BRING. IT.

Now that I drink almond milk, I thought I’d bring this back, see if it still had that calming effect.

Yup, it’s still magic.

Something about the milk being warm and with the addition of all the spices and orange zest, it’s like bedtime in cup.

I’m sure you’ll be surprised by this, but sometimes I put it in a little mason jar, shake it up so it’s frothy and then drink directly from the jar. It’s my comfort.

I’m traveling this week, attending the alt summit conference and will be replacing the milk with wine. It only takes a few more glasses of wine, but they practically do the same thing. Bedtime.

Warm Spiced Milk

  • 2 cups Almond milk [or milk of choice]
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • pinch of ground ginger
  • pinch of ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest or 1-2 thin zest peels
  • optional – stevia for additional sweetness

In a small pot, heat milk. Whisk in vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves and orange zest.

Whisk milk to make frosty or add to your blender/magic bullet – optional.

Pour into your mug and enjoy!

My mom used to make something similar almost every night for me. Such fond memories I had forgotten about! Thanks for sharing!

Oooh, this reminds me of something my mom used to make for me – just on special occasions when I couldn’t sleep when I was little.  I love the idea of the orange zest – that was something she never did – I’m going to try that 🙂

I was also an anxious child, and could not deal with sleepovers, they terrorized me…

I don t have trouble to fall asleep, but wake up often and rarely have a nice night!s sleep.

I am going to give your milk a try tonight, I have verything at home, even the ground cloves! 🙂

I have been wanting to try almond milk for a while now, but I am a little timid (I can be quite the picky eater). I am absolutely going try it now using this recipe! My mom used to make warm milk with honey for my sister and I growing up. So comforting!

This is amazing! For a little extra protein and fiber, I added 1 tbsp of chia seed powder. It transforms this drink into a porridge but minus the calories and fat. Since I love heat, I grated 1 tsp. of fresh ginger (in addition of ground ginger) and 3 peppercorns. I will surely be having this every and night. In the morning you could some earl grey and voila, you’ve made Indian chai tea. Thank you for this recipe!

I warm up my almond milk in a pot with powdered cinnamon. I sweeten it with Trader Joe’s turkish honey.
